Todas estas pr\u00e1cticas son importantes, pero hay otro factor que no siempre recibe la misma atenci\u00f3n: el riego.<\/p>\n<p>En esencia, la agricultura regenerativa consiste en crear las condiciones para que el suelo se recupere y se mantenga resiliente por s\u00ed mismo.\n\nY la forma en que una explotaci\u00f3n gestiona el riego puede ir en contra de ese objetivo o, de manera silenciosa, hacerlo posible.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>El agua como aliada de la salud del suelo<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Los suelos sanos respiran, absorben, reciclan nutrientes y almacenan carbono. Pero solo pueden hacerlo si el entorno bajo la superficie es lo suficientemente estable para que la vida microbiana prospere. Ah\u00ed es donde entra en juego el riego de precisi\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p class=\" translation-block\">El riego de precisi\u00f3n optimiza la humedad del suelo, aumentando tanto el carbono org\u00e1nico del suelo (SOC) como la actividad microbiana, especialmente en climas m\u00e1s secos y en suelos de textura fina.\n\nSeg\u00fan un metaan\u00e1lisis sistem\u00e1tico publicado en PMC, la agricultura de regad\u00edo increment\u00f3 las reservas de SOC en un 5,9 %, con mayores mejoras observadas en los suelos superficiales, en suelos de textura fina y bajo riego por aspersi\u00f3n, todos factores que tambi\u00e9n favorecen un microbioma del suelo activo y saludable.<\/p>\n<p>Suministrar agua y nutrientes directamente en la zona radicular reduce el desperdicio, evita la escorrent\u00eda y ayuda a que los suelos aumenten su fertilidad de forma natural.\n\nAdem\u00e1s, cuando los sistemas de riego est\u00e1n enterrados, minimizan la alteraci\u00f3n del suelo, preservan su estructura y facilitan mantener los cultivos de cobertura en la rotaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p class=\" translation-block\">Un estudio publicado en Scientific Reports (Nature) encontr\u00f3 que los umbrales de riego de precisi\u00f3n afectan las tasas de descomposici\u00f3n del carbono org\u00e1nico del suelo (SOC), donde un exceso de agua en las primeras etapas vegetativas acelera la descomposici\u00f3n del SOC l\u00e1bil.\n\nEste hallazgo demuestra que la gesti\u00f3n del agua no solo influye en la salud del cultivo, sino que tambi\u00e9n impacta directamente en el ciclo del carbono y la fertilidad del suelo a largo plazo.\n\nLos investigadores recomiendan establecer umbrales de riego ajustados al contexto para optimizar el secuestro de carbono en el suelo.<\/p>\n<p>En otras palabras: el agua no solo \u201cmantiene vivas a las plantas\u201d, sino que define las condiciones para la regeneraci\u00f3n bajo la superficie.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Construyendo resiliencia por encima del suelo<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Para los agricultores, la resiliencia lo es todo. Inundaciones un a\u00f1o, sequ\u00eda al siguiente: es un ciclo bien conocido.\n\nUn suelo capaz de retener agua en periodos secos y absorberla en periodos h\u00famedos marca la diferencia entre sobrevivir y prosperar.<\/p>\n<p>Al reducir la erosi\u00f3n, estabilizar el suelo y mantener los nutrientes en su lugar, el riego de precisi\u00f3n contribuye directamente a esa resiliencia.\n\nAyuda a que los cultivos de cobertura desarrollen sistemas radiculares m\u00e1s fuertes, facilita la implementaci\u00f3n de agroforester\u00eda o cultivos intercalados, y reduce la extracci\u00f3n de agua de r\u00edos y acu\u00edferos, protegiendo la salud de las cuencas para todos los que dependen de ellas aguas abajo.<\/p>\n<p class=\" translation-block\">Revisiones recientes en Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems sostienen que los suelos mejorados retienen m\u00e1s agua de lluvia y reducen la necesidad de riego, demostrando de forma cuantitativa que cada mejora en la capacidad de retenci\u00f3n de agua del suelo se traduce en un menor uso de agua de riego, incluso en regiones con estr\u00e9s h\u00eddrico.\n\nSin embargo, los autores advierten que gestionar activamente la humedad del suelo para fines regenerativos requiere un control cuidadoso del uso del agua, especialmente en zonas donde las asignaciones h\u00eddricas a nivel de cuenca son limitadas.\n\nSe\u00f1alan que el uso adicional de agua para la regeneraci\u00f3n del suelo podr\u00eda generar presi\u00f3n sobre los recursos disponibles, por lo que debe equilibrarse con las necesidades del conjunto de la cuenca.<\/p>\n<p class=\" translation-block\">El resultado no son solo suelos m\u00e1s sanos, sino tambi\u00e9n rendimientos m\u00e1s fiables, incluso cuando el clima no acompa\u00f1a.\n\nNumerosos estudios demuestran que el riego de precisi\u00f3n mejora significativamente los rendimientos al mantener niveles \u00f3ptimos de humedad exactamente cuando y donde el cultivo lo necesita.\n\nPor ejemplo, en Illinois, un campo de ma\u00edz gestionado con CropX produjo un 22 % m\u00e1s de grano sin eventos de estr\u00e9s, mientras que el campo vecino gestionado de forma tradicional tuvo un rendimiento inferior.
